Custodianship Services for International Students

In Canada, a “Custodian” is required by law for international students who are 17 years old or younger and studying without a parent or legal guardian present. A custodian must be a responsible Canadian resident (citizen or permanent resident) who acts as the student’s legal guardian while in Canada.

The custodian is legally accountable for the student’s well-being. In the event of legal issues or emergencies, the custodian bears serious responsibility. For students, the custodian is the first point of contact when help is needed.

Under Canadian law, the minimum requirement for a custodian is simply being over 19 years old and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Many private school principals serve as custodians for hundreds of students, and some families rely on local friends or relatives. While this may satisfy legal requirements, it often falls short of ensuring the child’s academic and personal success abroad.
